Getting my Green Act Together!

Hi everyone!

I'm so excited about the progress we're making on the Charity Works Green House! If you're new to this blog, or this project in general, drumroll please! The website is now up and running and is Gorgeous! I only wish MY website was this beautiful, but that's another project for another day. I'm sticking with this little blog to keep everyone informed of what I'm doing right here on this little Green Page! Be sure to check out my links on the right and see the website for yourself!

It's funny, people that know me are just initially amazed that now I'm "The Green Girl" because if you met me I certainly don't fit the preconceived notion of "Green". I mean, sheesh! I wear Blahniks, not Birkenstocks, and until this point in my life I thought I was doing my part for the world just by dragging my recycling bins to the street every Thursday! Being a part of this project has made me open my eyes to just how much everyone can contribute to being Green just by changing small things they do every single day. I think twice before I print out my e-mails, I make a conscious effort in thinking about what goes into my trash bin (can this be recycled? is it renewable?) and thus I've reduced my personal waste. I just don't go out and buy even a new lipgloss without remembering that I probably have a dozen just like it floating around in my handbag. Sure, you may laugh and think this is shallow, but I really think about my choices now, and all of those containers of shampoo and hair products and makeup and wrinkle reducing creams (I must have a thousand of those! Ha!) are now being totally used up and properly recycled before I buy something new. Waste not, want not, right? I'm reducing MY carbon footprint in a small, fashionable way and encouraging my friends to do the same. Plus, I'm learning so much about running my business in a greener way as well.

As an interior designer I'm deluged with products from hundreds of vendors. "Use my trim", "Buy my furniture" they all say. But now I'm really putting serious thought into who and I buy from, and why. It's much more than just finding a beautiful cocktail table or some gorgeous wallpaper for a client. It's all about "Is this product made domestically?" Are the materials used in this table "sustainable". Are you as a company kind to the planet? Being a part of the Charity Works Green House is making me realize that the world is bigger than just me, and I'm so excited to keep promoting this through my Virtual Golf Room!

By now, if you read my previous post "Virtual Golf is Twitteriffic!" you know that I'm really digging all things twitter. If you're not on it, you're really missing out on making some unbeleivable friends who are helping to promote the Green House one tweet at a time. For example, my new Twitter friend @JohnStrauss who designs the most UNBELEIVABLY GORGEOUS sustainable furniture you've EVER seen posted a tweet this morning that people should really follow @LynniMegginson because I'm mounting a one woman campaign to reduce the water costs on golf courses to ZERO! How funny is that? But you know, it's true. My doing this Virtual Golf room is not only a fun way to get people to come out and see the house, and support our CW Partner Friendship Charter Public School with the proceeds, it's a great way for people to see that Virtual Golf DOES help the environment by giving you a way to enjoy the game rain, snow, sleet or hail!

And speaking of Twitter updates, now @TodayShow is following me as well, so I'll continue to Tweet the word about our project and keep the ball rolling. Please please share this blog and the wonderful links on it with your friends: Golfers, Green Lovers, or those who are just as addicted to Decorator Showhouses as I am! I promise to try to keep you amused right here Behind the Green Scenes! Keep reading the posts below to get caught up on what you've missed, and if you see Matt Lauer, tell him I'll see him on the links!

xoxoxo,

Virtual Golf is Twitteriffic!

Sheesh! Being a Design Gal on the Go is exhausting!

First of all, I have to update you on the CharityWorks 100 Point Wine Tasting held this past Saturday at the home of Jean-Marie and Raul Fernandez. Talk about spectacular! Words cannot describe the evening...the weather was perfect, their home was TO DIE FOR, and I felt like I was on a movie set where someone was going to yell CUT! at any moment. The night started out with informal cocktails by the pool, and then we were ushered into THE BIGGEST AIR CONDITIONED TENT I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE (well, actually the ONLY air conditioned tent I've ever been in, but I digress). The crowd was comprised of some pretty amazing people...Congressmen, the former Undersecretary of Defense, a fabulous hotelieress from Middleburg, VA, world renowned interior designers, NBA and NFL team owners, and, well, me. The tiny rung on a BIG ladder, but I held my own nonetheless, and my outfit was even photographed by Washington Life magazine so I guess I didn't stick out like the proverbial sore thumb too much! Thank goodness!

I can't even go into how divine the food and the wine was or I may start crying because I know I will never, ever, experience them again in this lifetime, but needless to say when you combine the talents of chefs from CityZen, Vidalia, INOX, and more with bottles of wine that range from 2,000.00 a bottle to priceless you can just imagine how thrilling it was!

The good news is, that even if at the start of the evening most people didn't know me from Adam's Housecat, by the end of the night they sure knew who the Virtual Golf Girl was because I used my Southern Charm AND my awesome Gourmet and Golf auction item to introduce everyone to the room I'll be designing in the CharityWorks Green House. Lucky Mark Lowham who snagged my golf package!!!! And lucky me, because I'll get to be there when he hosts his private party for 8 in the CharityWorks Virtual Golf Room. Cool!

And speaking of chatter, I've been recently introduced to the newest means of communication on the planet: The Wonderful World of Twitter! As you know, along with this blog, I'm doing everything I can to spread the word about the Green House, because the more people that come out and support the project the more money CharityWorks will raise to help Friendship Public Charter School, our CW partner. So, enter Twitter, a form of communication that asks you only ONE question: What are you doing right now? It's simple...you answer in 140 characters or less, trying to make your posts interesting and clever to encourage more people to follow you. The more people that follow you, the more of your posts that will be seen by other people's streams. It's really amazing: since I've been Twittering about the Virtual Golf Room, I now have the PGA Tour, The Espy Awards, The Virtual Golf Society and even a few sparkly celebrities following me on Twitter. How cool is that? People all over the country are helping me spread the word, and it's catching on like wildfire.

So here's the deal. Don't laugh.

We all know that Matt Lauer from The Today Show is a passionate golfer, right? Well, my goal is to get Matt Lauer to come to DC and come play golf with me in my Virtual Golf Room. How's that for a lofty aspiration? We could get national exposure for the Green House on The Today Show, and spread the word about this amazing carbon neutral project that will change the way people look at "living green". Win Win Situation Folks!

So here's what I need you to do. It's easy! Simply spread the word about this blog by pressing the follow button on the right, and share the blog with your friends. If you're on Twitter, follow me @LynniMegginson. If you're on Facebook please post the link. See? It's simple! The more followers I have on this blog will make it even more compelling to Matt Lauer once I pitch it to him, so please follow follow follow!

The funny thing is that Al Roker and I are already tweeting each other on Twitter, so I figure the six degrees of separation between me and Matt Lauer has exponentially closed. Woo Hoo! Plus, I have several new awesome friends on Twitter, such as @LLLNorman (a famous west coast engineer) and @RanmarkGolf (a fellow wine lover who loves golf) and they are both on board to help me achieve my goal. Seriously, follow them if you're a Twitterholic because they're definitely helping the Green House by retweeting my posts and spreading the word.

Think I can do it? Be sure to follow the blog and tune in to keep up with everything that is happening Behind the Green Scenes. Oh, and somewhere in all my spare time I really need to learn how to play golf. Yikes!

By the way, you know that pesky little detail about actually DESIGNING the room and worrying about what's actually going in it besides the HD Golf Simulator? Like Scarlett O'Hara famously said: "Fiddle Dee Dee. I'll think about that tomorrow". Sorry Barry Dixon! I promise I'm on it! Really!

Signing off now. Sleep is beckoning. Please Follow Follow Follow!

Exclusive Golf and Gourmet Event!

Wow! I know my life has gotten exponentially better when my new passion for all things GOLF meets my existing passion for all things WINE! Hmmmm, you're thinking "What is this chick talking about NOW"? Well, I'm thrilled to announce that I will be attending the CharityWorks 100 point wine tasting event this weekend in Potomac, MD which has been deemed THE Social Event of the Season by many magazines in our area. Not only will I get to taste the best wines the world has to offer, chefs like Todd Gray from Equinox and Eric Ziebold from CITYZEN will be preparing a five couse meal for those of us who are lucky enough to attend. Someone pinch me now!

Naturally I always digress, but I have to let all of you Golf-a-Holics know that I am adding a little something to the event that you may be interested in. It's a Golf and Gourmet private party for 8 to be auctioned off this Saturday night at the Wine Event. Here's the deal:

You and your seven guests will enjoy a private night at the CharityWorks Green House where you will play a few rounds on the High Definition Golf Simulator in my Virtual Golf Room with a VERY special PGA Tour Pro who will be on hand to give you advice, or just a run for your money! Your party will enjoy a sumptuous gourmet dinner provided by the caterer of choice in our area, Susan Gage, who is a magnificent chef in her own right and always prepares the most magnificent food. Wander through the Green House, play golf, enjoy great wine and spirits, and if that's not enough, there's even more I'm throwing in!

How about two PGA Partner All Access Passes to the 2009 PGA Senior Tour Championship on the Final Day of play, May 24th 2009 at the Canterbury Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio. You will party like a rock star as you enjoy the competition from the front row of the VIP Gallery, schmooze in the PGA Tour Event Tents where you will be treated to an open bar and catered fare, and of course have access to Canterbury Country Club and it's amenities while you're there. The purse for this tournament is (gulp) rumored to be $2,000,000 so you'll see all of the heavy hitting legends of golf up close and personal during the event. I have to give a big shout out to my friend Ken Bauer of Bauer International who will be partnering with me on the CW Greenhouse for hooking me up with these tickets, because they are not available to the public at ANY PRICE.

That's right, unless you are a PGA Partner it's hasta la vista baby when you try to get through that velvet rope without these prized lanyards around your neck.

If you're interested in pre-bidding on this package, e-mail me at Lynni@Lynni.net and I'll write down your bid during the Silent Auction at the Wine Event this weekend. I have so much more to share with you golf lovers next week, but for now I'm going to bask in the glow of being in the In-Crowd, even if it's just for one day!

xoxo,

Lynni
